Born in New Jersey, Muehling spent his childhood combing the suburban
beaches for vestiges of nature. What he couldn’t find, he created for
himself in his father’s workshop, even making a copy of a Calder
sculpture from metal coat hangers. His mesmerising use of perforated porcelain to mimic coral is put to dramatic effect in his lantern and vase, as well as distinct coral spoons. Muehling's philosophy is “In this technological age, we can still be charmed and touched by the delicacy of a cup”. His poetic vision cannot fail to enchant.
