Since 1951 when Sarpaneva won the first of many awards (including 3 alone from the Milan Triennale), no single person has so dominated a country’s vision and image of itself as he has done, and in such diverse media such as glass, ceramics, graphics & textiles. As a designer he has always advocated renewal, remaining a pioneer throughout the 50 years of his career. Common themes running throughout his varied work are soft flowing forms, a distinct feeling for materials, and the desire for aesthetic perfection. His touch can still be seen today from the most commonplace objects to the most highbrow.
Kukinto means flower in Finnish and this piece for Venini, (one of Italy’s foremost glass companies) he captures the fragility of a poppy with painterly bands of glass in blue, green and red.
