These striking bowls by American artist Lynn Read look effortless in their making. Produced by the technique called incalmo, each coloured section must be blown to the exact size and shape required, when ready they are joined whilst hot allowing the glass to bond. Once attached there can be no amendments. A very exacting process that takes extreme skill. This skill is matched by the perfect marriage of colour in each piece.
Read's inspiration
stems from sources as diverse as medieval tapestry to Bauhaus. One of
the most important aspects of his work is that the pieces are all made
by hand, free of moulds and automation, using age old techniques of
glass blowing that have remained unchanged for centuries. The directness
of his approach is a welcome juxtaposition to the graphic nature of his
forms. |
