Kelly Allsopp is a recent graduate from the Royal College of Art who creates lovingly hand crafted porcelain.
On a visit to Shanghai’s live insect market Allsopp was at once repulsed and yet intrigued. Suspended from every height were cages that covered entire shop fronts. Contained within them were spiders - all seemingly thinking of escape.
It is this conflict of emotions that Allsopp is drawn to and conveys in her work. The luxury of gold and platinum lustre hand pained onto finely modelled porcelain is in contrast to the unsettling and disturbing figure of a huge house spider.
