One of the best known Finnish glass designers in the world, Toikka has
had an adoring audience for his work for decades. Sometimes known as
the funny man of Finnish glass, on closer examination of the man and
his work, one can detect strict discipline, a slightly dark artistic
sensibility and an unfettered imagination. His work ranges from the
highly practical, such as Kastehelmi glass serving plates to the most
abstract of art pieces, his lollipop sculptures.
He has won numerous prizes such as the Lunning and Kaj Franck Prizes.
Indeed, his captivating collection of birds have been in production for
over 30 years originally produced in Nuutajärvi, and now by the master
craftsmen at Iittala. They are the ultimate summation of his
inexhaustible knowledge of glass and his high attention to detail.
For him glass is the natural medium to capture the fluidity of birds’
shapes and their vivid colour. Beautifully streamlined, gloriously
hued, affordable enough to buy a small flock or give as a gift, each
bird is lovingly hand made and unique. |
